Looking at switch from Clarion 10 to WinDev 22 - Developer feelings on WinDev

Hi Everybody
Not a WinDev developer yet. I’ve been developing using Clarion from Softvelocity since 1992 but have noticed that Softvelocity is not keeping themselves up to date with what the market demand is for developers. I am using the latest version and cannot run it on Windows 8, 8.1 or 10, it keeps crashing at random. Fairly stable using it on Windows 7.

I have been looking at WinDev environment for some time now and is at the point to make a move and change. I have now played with the two “Express” versions and find it very good.

What I need is the honest opinion from WInDev developers on the environment, cross platform integration and stability. If there are any x-Clarion developers, can you let me know how easy the transformation was?

Thanx
Raymond :)

Hello Raymond :

I am an ex-clarion programmer, I even have some clients almost nothing with
this language and migrating what is possible. From clarion to Windev it's
like going from overnight to night, by this I mean that you have everything
and much easier. You have to change some concepts regarding claron, but
there are not many, learning is very fast (they are only days).

For my part you go well, the language is good, this is the current
technology and every year new versions and improvements.

Victor

Hi Raymond,

Just go there http://27130.foren.mysnip.de/list.php…
and you'll find a lot of ex-clarioners who switched to windev and co.

Also, do a search on the clarion keyword here, as you are not the first
one to ask that question (and answers from the mysnip forum are copied here)

Best regards

Hi Raymond,
there are many Clarion developers using WX (Windev, Webdev and Mobile).
Clarion was my primary development environment since it was introduced for DOS up to v7.
I still have many apps in Clarion v6.3 running with Btrieve and MSSQL

Now if you have the time and patience you could be up and running in 3 to 6 months.
The Windev IDE, the compiled applications, and the included HFSQL C/S RDBMS are - at least for me - rock solid.

At the beginning, you will miss the Clarion templates, but the IDE is so beautiful and so powerful and everything is so INTEGRATED that you will soon forget them.

Now the WEBDEV IDE is not as powerful as the WINDEV IDE.
And that is "natural" since the WEB is not the same or as mature as the Desktop.
But you can use WEBDEV to transform your WINDEV apps to WEB applications - with the same codebase.
WEBDEV is GREAT for WEB apps but not so good for "fancy websites".

Same thing for MOBILE - I use it primarily for Android development and I can't comment on iOS support.

You can go to our website, www.alpha360.biz, and check out our alpha360 projects.
The Open Source WINDEV ERP implementation is very Clarion like in it's programming style.
