I cannot find any documentation on this and I recently had some issues with buttons not responding when the type was wrong. Some popups work when set to Link, some don't (Operation and action set to none of course) Most of my buttons seem to be of the link <a> referencable type, but I don't know where that comes from. I often copy buttons, not bothering about its type. I guessed the button type does a form post while a link type does not. So the link type seems appropriate for popups. This assumption seems wrong, because some popups work and some don't. It's a trial and error process to find out what works. Or should I set all to automatic? Any hints or info appreciated, I don't like guessing when it comes to programming.
