Dear Guenter,
I find it rather disturbing that some people feel it necessary to post messages on this forum under different psuedonyms. I also find it disturbing that some people do not use legitimate email addresses. I do understand that some would prefer not to have their email published unless they do so themselves.
Is it not possible to insist that anyone posting to this forum uses a valid email address, while not publishing it on their message unless they give permission? Is it also possible to check that any one person only posts under one name?
I cannot conceive of what feelings of insecurity would lead anyone to post under several psuedonyms.
Kindest regards,
Clive Dickinson

** Dear Clive,
** way back in April 2000, we've had to make up our minds about the forum philosophy. The decision was to allow anyone to freely post their messages under any (nick)name on the WinDev-forum. There may arise reasons (even to yourself) to seek help or express a point of view without declaring name and (mail)address. Of course, since I'm the forum admin I can look up IPs and I can draw my conclusions. But be assured, I will never ever publish any names or comment on possible identities.
>Is it not possible to insist that anyone posting to this forum uses a valid email address, while not publishing it on their message unless they give permission? Is it also possible to check that any one person only posts under one name?
** Yes, theoretically we could kind of 'close' the forum and permit only registered users with checked and proven e-mail addresses. This would mean to kind of kill the forum and would hurt ALL users. Less visitors => less help & less information.
I cannot conceive of what feelings of insecurity would lead anyone to post under several psuedonyms.

** If someone decides to post under a different nick s/he may have reasons to do so. Who am I to forbid it? If a posting contains bad language or insults to others, we can delete it anyway. Later on. And if you feel insulted by any message you could ask me for deletion, no problem. But as long as messages are WinDev-related I honestly do not see the difference between name 'A' and name 'B'.
Kindest regards,
Clive Dickinson

** Clive, I do know the reason of your (and others) indignation. Please, take it easy. No one has been killed, no red traffic-lights have been crossed. So, keep cool!

Hi Clive,
>Dear Guenter,

Like Guenter mentioned in his reply (pfff, and i agree ), nobody is hurt,
there was no offence and for the rest - even though Mr Purton likes to keep his
WinDev knowledge secret, only available for his happy few - the JPS
postings were not that bad.
So, as long there is a free forum, anonymous postings will be possible.

Peter,
Hi Clive,
Dear Guenter,
First of all, i don't think addressing someone directly in a post on a

public forum is the right way to go, for that purpose email, fax, telephone,
is more appropriate.

It seems that you have just directly addressed me in your post. I simply posted to Guenter as the Administrator of the Forum.
It would appear that I have no understanding of the rules of forum etiquette!?
My apologies.
Regards,
Clive

Guenter,
Thanks for your reply. I accept your decision and will say no more about it after this post. I would not say my reaction was of indignation. It was just that I (and I think a few other readers of this forum) get a little tired of the games played by some people, changing their names, posting harsh words, looking down their noses at other peoples' posts and making political mileage out of prmising things to people that they never deliver. I believe that it devalues an otherwise excellent forum. Perhaps I am too old now for the shenanigans that go on. Perhaps it is time I retired gracefully from the scene. I have been in this game for over 30 years and I get tired of confrontation. It gets in the way of genuine discussion.
Anyway thanks for the hearing and I accept your rulings happily.
Regards,
Clive

Hi Everyone
Vote for getting Donald Duck (Alias whatever) off this forum.
All the mails that I've send to him was never answered. Now I understand. He changes his mail address everyday to place himself in a position that he can't deliver on his promises.

Marius

I'm with Clive on this matter. I took it that posting under any name/nickname simply meant a handle by which one could be known (so instead of writing Christopher Andrew Livingstone, I could simply use Chris L). I can't see any reason why anyone would need to hide their identity in a technical forum like this - being an online forum, we're pretty anonymous as it is. Similarly, I see no reason for giving false e-mail addresses. Someone mentioned spamming but anyone who uses the Internet for any period of time will cop spam from all directions - it's not a valid excuse for withholding your e-mail address in this forum.
No-one, especially technical specialists such as those who use this forum, should be afraid to express his/her opinion and to put his/her name to this opinion. If your purpose is simply to be an agent provacateur, a "troll", just to stir up tensions and trouble, then you have no place in this forum or any other serious forum. Neither do you have a place if you just want to plant propaganda or advertising.
I have had help from many people in this forum. I've also had disagreements with a few, people who have opinions in opposition to my own. While I might strongly disagree with their opinions, (and may even think they're off the planet), I can respect them as sincerely held views because people are prepared to put their names to these opinions. Over time, I see where they're coming from and may even come to understand why they believe what they do. In the past, we've even had a couple of diehard Clarion devotees putting strong views but even they haven't been afraid to use their own names because they believe in their cause. But how can one respect someone who cloaks their views in anonymity?
You said that registration would kill off the forum. I believe you're quite wrong on this. (There's a contrary opinion for you!) I'm not suggesting that you need to change this forum but registration is no deterrent for serious users. I make use of a number of forums where anyone can read the forum but only registered users can post messages - that seems a pretty reasonable idea. (Actually, if it was only a matter of a check box on the Parsimony setup for this forum, I reckon it would be worth considering.)
Just my (contrary) opinion.
