Hello folks,
Asking for this question only a newbie can do that and that's correct : I am.
When creating files you can hit the box 'Automatic identifier found in file'.
What are the pros en cons :
- When I have a file with keys I always have key-fields with all kind of values not a sequence number started from 1 and always updated with 1 as the automatic identifier does (I think)
- When I have a file without keys (mostly a file with 1 'profile' record) I don't nead any key.
So, what's the purpose of that identifier?

Hi Teun,
Use it. This way wd can handle your keys and relations automatically which keeps you from having to manually code everything.
Use any other keys you want for sorts, etc.
Keep it simple and let wd do the work.

Hi Teun,
Another consideration to use the automatic indentifier is that the record number is never sure. When you delete a racord the record number will be reused, the indetifier however will continue to count.

What are your experience about 'bad' AI's and index-problems like Peter writes?

Hi Teun,
sometimes you get an doublicate key or the AI jumps to a very great number.
Expirience only with WD5.5
With WD7.5 we have no problem, but the programm is not finished = no customer test.

So far I have had no problems but my data files are relatively small and I backup back them up several times a day.
