Hello all WinDevers,
Has anyone ever tried to develop an WD app with FireBird?
When Ricardo posted a message "Windev and others Free DataBase :(" and mentioned "WD don¢¥t work very well on ODBC connection", he did not get a good response. Ricardo was wrong, WD8(7.5) does not work with FireBird ODBC at all!
That same ODBC works very well with Clarion(I am sorry that I had to mention "C" word & cannot care if that ODBC is level 1, 2 or whatever, as far as I know that ODBC brings up all info from FireBird database with all my tools including "C"larion).
When I checked FireBird ODBC help file(ODBCJDBC.CHM), it even has a section for Clarion.
Don't get me wrong! I am not talking for Clarion. I like my WD8! i will love it if PcSoft lifts the ban of FireBird ODBC(or all other ODBCs).
If any WinDever followed the Clarion news group, even Clarion could connect FireBird SQL server using the FREE ODBC, only recently Clarion developers start to jump on the FireBird band wagon(Mr. Kelvin Chua is the main cause).
Take a look at http://www.eicsoftware.com/firebird/(one of the small cases).
Before it gets too late, we all WinDevers must ask PcSoft to support ODBC!
Thanks,
Don

Hi Don (& Ricardo),
>Has anyone ever tried to develop an WD app with FireBird?
Not a real one.
When Ricardo posted a message "Windev and others Free DataBase :(" and mentioned
"WD don¢¥t work very well on ODBC connection", he did not get a good response.
Ricardo was wrong, WD8(7.5) does not work with FireBird ODBC at all!

We've had a little bit the same 'discussion' some months ago.
I do not know exactly to what level you want WD to work with FB.
For me it is not a problem to :
- Connect to a FB DB via ODBC
- Connect to a FB DB via (alter)native access (IB4WD)
- Import a FB DB via 'ODBC via OLEDB' - Ok problem not recognizing indexes, but got the same problem with Access & FB)
So for me the 'WD8(7.5) does not work with FireBird ODBC at all' remark is a
little bit strange ...

Peter

Hello Peter,
- Connect to a FB DB via ODBC
- Connect to a FB DB via (alter)native access (IB4WD)
- Import a FB DB via 'ODBC via OLEDB' - Ok problem not recognizing indexes, but got the same problem with Access & FB)

"Connect to" & do what?
As you replied to Ricardo;
(Statements like 'it does not work very well' without explaining the problem
can be the start of a troll and doesn't help that much ...)
Just saying "I could connect to FB" does not mean a thing.
If WD supports ODBC, Why IB4WD?
Can you generate codes using WD RAD after you connect to FB using ODBC/IB4WD?
No bashing at all here.
I just want PcSoft to support ODBC.
Thanks,
Don
ODBC - (pronounced as separate letters) Short for Open DataBase Connectivity, a standard database access method developed by the SQL Access group in 1992. The goal of ODBC is to make it possible to access any data from any application, regardless of which database management system (DBMS) is handling the data. ODBC manages this by inserting a middle layer, called a database driver , between an application and the DBMS. The purpose of this layer is to translate the application's data queries into commands that the DBMS understands. For this to work, both the application and the DBMS must be ODBC-compliant -- that is, the application must be capable of issuing ODBC commands and the DBMS must be capable of responding to them.

select, insert, update & delete ?

Because IB4WD is 'native' access and ODBC not.
>Can you generate codes using WD RAD after you connect to FB using ODBC/IB4WD?
Don't know, not using RAD but that has finally nothing to do with ODBC.
No bashing at all here.

OK.

WD does.
'The goal of ODBC is to make it possible to access any data from any
application, regardless of which database management system (DBMS) is handling
the data.'

[...]
Exactly, and that is exactly what WD (and many many more xGL's, Excel's etc) can
do.

Hello Peter,
What you are doing is pure lip service.
This is what PcSoft support said "As far as we can tell, the problem is that the ODBC driver did not return the indexes."
With ODBC connection, you cannot create indexes.
With OLEDB you can but the field has to be nemeric.
Why don't you download FB ODBC and try to RAD a simplest app? And show it everybody. Do not try to confuse current & future WD FB/Postgre wannabes.
If you insist WD without RAD capavilities, you just sound like R??(The guy who can do anything with Clarion templates).
Thanks & no response please.
