They are in the documentation, but not much about what they are good for, their scope, etc. Any info, anyone?

Parameter1 is the sortkey string and Parameter2 is the record number in a file.
They can be used to create a sortable list of records in a file so one use is as a temporary index.
Another use is in reports. Select data by reading through the table and add record numbers and a sort key to the memzone, sort the memzone, then either pass the memzone to a report as a list of records to be printed or use the memzone as a sorted list to present data some other way. The removal of the table limitations in V8 means that they have lost some of their usefullness.
