Thanks for going to so much trouble to help me out. After reading your message I have just tried it in 7.5 and you are correct it is a 5.5 issue.
In my current screens the field displays as "___.__" in development mode and when it runs, whereas in 7.5 it shows as 999.99 in development mode and blank when it runs so it tests properly.
Nice to know it won't be a problem when I convert.
