Hello All
One of our clients has a Window 2208R2 server running under Citrix and I have admin rights on the server
When I run WDModfic the user permissions dissapear on the files that have their structure changes and the files apear in Explorer with a padlock icon. I think WDModifc creates a new empty file with the new structure and then brings the data into from the old file.
The response from the clients tech support is : "So it looks like your software doesn’t respect file inheritance and creates its own permissions on files if it isn’t restricted to not be able to."
I can't believe that PCSoft would construct a utility program to work in that manner and this is the only site where I have the problem. Other sites run MS Server - all versions to 2012 and a few other odd combinations with mutliple users in Win7
I think the issue is to do with the way the permissions are setup and/or Citrix as this is the only site that runs Citrix.
Any ideas ?
I will also see what PCSoft tech support think.
Regards Al |

Al,
I remember I saw this problem on a customer site but I can't for the life of me remember what caused it as it was well over a year ago maybe even 2 years. I was running MODFIC on a site that uses HF Classic (not HF C/S).
What I do know is that (in my circumstance), it definitely wasn't caused by Citrix because they don't go near it.
HTH in some small way? |

Hi Al,
I never had this problem. Is your database Client/Server or Classic? If it's classic : are you running WDModFic over network or on the server desktop?
Regards,
Joris. |

Hi Al,
Then I think it depends on the user rights you have in Windows.
As far as I know, WDModfic is replacing your 'old' files by the 'new' ones that where first created somewhere in the windows temp directories.

Hi Al,
Yes it indirectly can, as Joris explains. The "user" under which WDMODFIC runs will have given rights and if a file is created it will affect the rights of that file.
So for example if WDMODFIC is run under Administrator account on existing files that where created by a simple user account, you might find files with Administrator rights after and the user will be block on these files.
A simple way to avoid this is to define access rights on the folder specifying that when a file is created all users have access to it. It should then fix the problem.
Another way is to run WDMODFIC under another user account, if you have this possibility.
But WDMODFIC will not change the file access by itself. (But there, as you said, only PCSoft can give a precise explanation on what is going on.)
We also have Server 2008 R2 but we do not use Cytrix and we are under HFSQL C/S.
Best regards, Alexandre Leclerc |

Hello Alexander
They have changed my rights to "modify", but I haven't had a chance to test that as yet. I will ask them about setting up another user account to run the utility under as that will be a simple way around it.

Al,
Do you run WDMODFIC manually? What if it was implemented as part of your application; would that use exe permissions and bypass the issue? Just a thought as I've not tested it. |
