WM28 buttons have strange ripple effects when tapped?

We just upgraded from 26 to 28 and I've noticed that now, all of the buttons in our app have this strange black halo-like ripple effect when you tap on them even though there is a completely different background image applied to all of them. I'd like to remove the effect because when a button is active, we have the icon/text turn red.

Unfortunately I cannot get a screenshot of this animation/effect on the buttons because it happens so fast but below is an image of what is applied to the buttons
